Women who have women have a mastectomy can benefit by wearing a compression vest and sleeve to reduce swelling and possibly avoid lymphedema. Every patient is different, compression vests and tops are worn on average for six to eight weeks after breast cancer surgery, but some people may need to wear them longer.
Compression garments are worn to reduce the risk of lymphedema, swelling, poor circulation and other conditions to maintain increased blood flow and the reduction of fluids pooling in the extremities.
There are compression stockings that are available off the shelf and some that require a prescription. The garments with higher compression require a doctor’s prescription. People who have poor blood circulation, a history of heart disease, diabetes, deep vein thrombosis, or stand for long periods of time may also suffer from swollen limbs.
